Abstract

Using a multiplexer and demultiplexer built from discrete GaAs FETs, a directly modulated distributed feedback laser, and a low capacitance avalanche photodiode receiver, the authors have achieved transmission at 4 Gb/s over 103 km of single-mode optical fiber at 1. 54 mu m. The modulation bandwidth of the laser and the APD were adequate for Gb/s transmission, and the penalty from laser linewidth broadening during modulation could be made small, despite the presence of large fiber dispersion in the minimum loss region of 1. 5 mu m.
