Analysis of wavelet-based compression in digital mammography on a clinical gray-scale display

Abstract

The effect of a wavelet-based image compression method on lesion detection was evaluated for digital mammography using a clinical gray-scale display. Compression conditions of 1:1, 15:1, and 30:1 were investigated. Perceptual analysis indicated no significant differences in detection for masses but indicated significant differences for microcalcifications beyond 15:1 compression. Similar trends were observed with numerical observer models.
