Augmenting resource management education with AI technologies

Research output: Contribution to journalArticle

Abstract

College graduates today need to have more diverse skills than ever before to be competitive in the workforce. Technology is at the forefront of this wave. The Advanced Resource Technology program (ART) in the School of Renewable Natural Resources at the University of Arizona has developed a range of courses to provide its students with advanced technological skills in addition to a conventional natural resource management education. One of these courses was established to provide the student with state-of-the-art knowledge about the application of AI to help solve a range of problems in natural resources and agriculture. This course focuses onthe integration of AI with spatial data such as geographic information systems, global positioning systems, and remote sensing to augment decision making. Using commercial software with minimal programming requirements has proved successful in introducing and teaching the concepts of AI without requireing extensive program development.
