Abstract
The author describes an overview study that he and his colleagues conducted of 16 randomized trials published from 1985 through 1995. The data regarding cholesterol reduction and the risk of stroke were extracted using a computerized literary search of approximately 29,000 subjects. These patients were treated and followed over a 3-year period. The data support the conclusion that large reductions in cholesterol levels will have a beneficial effect on stroke and mortality.
