Abstract
The exciton/photon coupling in multiple quantum well structures and microcavities was investigated. The time-integrated curves from the degenerate four-wave mixing on GaAs single and multiple quantum well Bragg samples revealed a double exponential decay. The initial rapid drop with a decay time of 2.5 ps reflected the depletion of the superradiant mode. The remaining signal due to the subradiant mode decayed with a time constant of 9 ps giving an upper limit of 40 μeV for disorder-induced scattering to the homogeneous linewidth. The interwell exciton/photon coupling was a pronounced low excitation phenomenon that rapidly disappeared with increasing excitation intensity due to intrawell exciton/exciton Coulomb scattering.
