Abstract

This paper reviews research examining intergenerational communication in two distinct areas. First, considerable research has examined communication between younger and older adults who are strangers. This work has often focused on stereotyping processes and "patronizing communication", as well as other discursive features of intergenerational interaction. Second, recent research has begun to examine relational elements in such talk, particularly by examining the grandparent-grandchild relationship. This work will be described within the context of theoretical models such as the communication predicament of aging model and communication accommodation theory.
