Abstract

Seven Cuphea species that are among the most promising for domestication were intercrossed, and nine interspecific hybrids were cytologically characterized. The probability of chiasma formation between a pair of chromosome arms was calculated for each hybrid. Values ranged between 0.39 and 0.78. Estimates of genomic affinities were calculated between species. Hybrids between C. procumbens and C. llavea were fertile and exhibited a high degree of chromosomal homology (genomic affinities being close to 0.95). Other species combinations had genomic affinities between 0.5 and 0.7, and their hybrids were sterile. The hybrid C. leptopoda x C. laminuligera is of considerable interest because it is the first interspecific hybrid between Cuphea species that have major differences in fatty acid percentages.
