Electrical stimulation to heal diabetic foot ulcers

Abstract

The effectiveness of electrical stimulation as an adjunct to diabetic wound care is evaluated. The study is designed as a twelve-week, randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled trial consisting of two groups of diabetic patients with neuropathic foot ulcers. The acquired data suggest that electrical stimulation of the diabetic foot, when combined with appropriate off-loading, wound-care and compliance would result in a higher prevalence of would healing and would likely contribute to the earlier return to functional activity and increased patient satisfaction.
