Energy balance and three-dimensional radiation distribution of water-cooled HPS lamps and of a Light-emitting Diode (LED) array

Abstract

Reducing the thermal load emitted by artificial lighting in greenhouses and growth chambers would significantly diminish the electrical input required for air conditioning. Also, a reduced thermal load from artificial lighting would enable the achievement of an optimized volume, and attendant mass, for plant growth chambers, which is especially important for bioregenerative space life support applications. The three-dimensional radiation outputs and energy balances of water-cooled 400-W high-pressure sodium (HPS) lamps and a light-emitting diode (LED) array gave the following results: (1) The electrical conversion efficiency for the control HPS lamp was 49%, exceeding the average efficiency for the water-cooled HPS lamps of 34%, or 30% when accounting for the water re-circulating pump; and (2) The electrical conversion efficiency of the LED array was 27.3%, based on total radiation output or PAR output, and was practically the same as that of the control HPS lamp of 27.3% based on PAR output.
