Enterovirus detection in water with gene probes

Abstract

Water virology has long aimed at the goal of the development of rapid and low cost methods for the detection of enteric viruses in water. Gene probes are small pieces of nucleic acid (either DNA or RNA) that hybridize to the complementary base pairs of specific genes and can be used to identify the genetic material of any organism. We report the development of cDNA probes against poliovirus and hepatitis A virus labeled with 32PdATP and 32PdCTP which is capable of detecting as little as one fg of nucleic acid or one tissue culture infective dose of poliovirus or one radio-immuno-focus unit of hepatitis A virus within 72 hours.
