Exchange force in the near-resonant Kapitza-Dirac effect

Abstract

We study the influence of the quantum statistics of the incident atoms in the Raman-Nath regime of atomic diffraction by an optical standing wave. The diffraction pattern of fermions shows a clear signature of the exchange force between particles.
