Experimental and numerical investigation of ps-pulse transmission in presence of PMD

Abstract

Theoretical aspects and measurement techniques of polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) and its influence on picosecond-pulse transmission are discussed. A numerical model is developed from the linear fiber birefringence with randomly varying orientation along the fiber. The fiber is considered as a sequence of segment where the birefringence orientation is fixed and randomly varying from segment to segment as well as segment length. The standard system of coupled nonlinear Schrodinger equations for polarization mode is used to simulate pulse propagation within each segment. A mode-locked Er-doped fiber ring laser is used in investigating the different effects of PDM.
