Finite element micromechanical-based model for hydro-mechanical coupling

Abstract

A coupled hydro-mechanical finite element model has been developed. The model can predict the hydro-mechanical coupling for applications such as slopes, tunnels and foundations. The basis for the mechanical part of the system is a micromechanical model for both extensile and shear crack growth. The basis for the hydraulic part of the model is the flow through rectangular tubes. The model takes into account three coupled processes: the decrease in permeability due to the squeezing of initially open cracks, the increase in permeability due to the growth of extensile cracks, and the increase in permeability due to the growth of shear cracks. Calibration studies with the model show close agreement with lab data.
