High density phase change optical recording using a solid immersion lens

Abstract

The use of solid immersion lens (SIL) optical head for high density phase change recording was demonstrated. Amorphous marks of 300nm in diameter were written and erased using the SIL (NAeff=1.1). This technique can be further improved and can achieve a higher density recording by using a shorter wavelength semiconductor laser and a higher refractive index lens mounted on a near contact or in-contact head slider.
