Abstract

The letter reports a high-performance FSK coherent optical communication system operating at 200Mbit/s at a wavelength of 1-53 /im. The received optical power needed to obtain a BER of 109 is equal to - 57-2 dBm or 74photons/bit, which is 1-7 dB from the shot noise limit. The result is obtained using monolithic frequency-tunable lasers and a high-sensitivity balanced photoreceiver.
