Abstract

The letter reports a high-performance FSK coherent optical communication system operating at 200 Mbit/s at a wavelength of 1.53 μm. The received optical power needed to obtain a BER of 10-9 is equal to -57.2 dbm or 74 photons/bit, which is 1.7 db from the shot noise limit. The result is obtained using monolithic frequency-tunable lasers and a high-sensitivity balanced photoreceiver.
