Abstract

There is an aura of mystique that surrounds mathematical modeling of water resources systems. Perhaps some of the mystique is due to the semantics of modeling rather than to the accomplishments of modeling. The literature describes three basic steps in mathematical modeling: (1) identification, (2) calibration, and (3) verification. Identification implies that one has available a set of models that covers all aspects of the physical system of interest and has sufficient information to select the model that applies.
