Incorporating Patient Photographs in the Radiology Image Acquisition and Interpretation Process

Abstract

Radiologic image interpretation is a complex task and unfortunately errors do occur. Some errors, however, might be preventable if the radiologist had additional information about the state of the patient when the images were acquired. A system was developed that automatically acquires a photograph of the patient simultaneously with portable radiographic images. Studies using this novel technology have demonstrated improved recognition of incorrectly labeled images, wrong side errors, improved ability to correctly detect and follow tubes and lines, and demonstrated that inclusion of the photo doers not significantly change viewing times.
