Abstract

An18O-enriched β-VOPO4 catalyst was synthesized by the conversion of (VO)2P2O7 to β-VOPO4 in the presence of O2. Characterization by laser Raman spectroscopy indicated the isotopic label was incorporated into specific tetrahedral lattice positions. On-line mass spectrometry of the products of n-butane and 1-butene reaction over the labeled catalyst (in the absence of gas phase oxygen) demonstrated that selective oxidation and combustion occurred at different sites. In situ Raman experiments indicated that the initial high activity of the catalyst was not associated with bulk catalyst reduction; over extended time periods, however, extensive reduction did occur.
