Abstract

Computer network research has recently focused on the feasibility of running mobile code on the intermediate nodes that forward packets through a network. A Java-based platform for liquid software, called Joust, that is specifically designed to support low-level, communication-oriented systems and to avoid the limitations of general purpose operating systems. The Scout operating system, its runtime system, and its just-in-time (JIT) compiler is described.
