Kaluza-Klein states versus winding states: Can both be above the string scale?

Abstract

An attempt is made to demonstrate the possibility for the string scale to be simultaneously lighter than all of the Kaluza-Klein (KK) states as well as all of the winding states. In such theories, it is thus possible to cross the string scale without seeing a single resonance associated with the spacetime compactification. This gives rise to a low-energy phenomenology which is markedly different from that of the usual KK effective field theories.
