Serial echocardiographic and angiographic measurements of left ventricular function were obtained in a patient with massive pulmonary embolism before and after pulmonary embolectomy. These data suggest that left ventricular dysfunction secondary to right ventricular failure is the result of markedly decreased left ventricular filling in this setting.
