Abstract

The development of super-paramagnetic polymer micelles as a new class of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) probes with high spin-spin relaxivity and sensitivity, was reported. The micelles consists of a cluster of hydrophobic magnetite particles encapsulated inside the hydrophobic core of polymeric micelle whose surface is stabilized by a poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) shell. The unique core-shell composite design helps to achieve an ultrasensitive MRI detection limit of 5.2 μgmL-1, and promises for an application in molecular imaging and image-visible drug delivery applications. An amphiphilic diblock copolymer of poly(η-caprolactone)-b-polyethylene glycol was used in the study.
