Abstract

This paper discusses the history and evolution of the MCDOT SMARTDrive Program. The program initiatives include development of an arterial Connected Vehicle technology test bed and applications aimed at advancing emergency response, enhancing responder safety and implementing a Multi-modal Intelligent Traffic Signal System (MMITSS) that will provide coordinated traffic signal priority to transit vehicles, emergency vehicles, freight vehicles and pedestrians. The paper also summarizes the lessons learned so far from the deployment of the test bed and demonstration of the applications.
