Abstract

Nonlinear effects in ordinary and partial differential equations can result in a wide variety of phenomena ranging from strange attractors to solitons. Despite their great diversity, many nonlinear equations have certain fundamental properties in common which are revealed by studying the types of singularities their solutions can exhibit. Many of the mathematical tools required for this study can be found in the classical literature.
