Abstract

The Modified Mapping-Collocation (MMC) method is re-examined and improved. With this improvement, the MMC method permits the imposition not only of tractions, but also of displacement constraints and mixed boundary conditions. In order to demonstrate this capability of the method, the response of a finite geometry anisotropic laminate containing a hole with either two edge cracks or one edge crack is investigated under both uniform tractions and displacement constraints. A specially orthotropic laminate containing two holes with double edge cracks is also studied in order to illustrate the effects of crack tip interactions and the finite geometry. The simplicity, versatility, and generality of the present formulation is demonstrated by capturing the singular behavior of the elastic stress field ahead of an edge crack in an isotropic plate. The results obtained from the present analysis compare favorably with those provided by others.
