New nonphotorefractive mechanism for two-beam coupling in a crystallographic-cut photorefractive crystal

Abstract

An unexpected two-beam coupling energy exchange has been observed in Bi12SiO20 without normal (electro-optic) photorefractive effects, using circularly polarized light and a frequency shift of a few hertz or using nonparallel linearly polarized light and no frequency shift. Two-beam coupling based on a photoinduced optical-activity phase grating explains this behavior.
