Numerical simulation of nonlinear waves in the wake of an axisymmetric bluff body

Abstract

The streamwise evolution of three-dimensional disturbances in the wake of a cylindrical, axisymmetric bluff body is investigated using direct numerical simulations based on the complete Navier-Stokes equations. In addition to the Navier-Stokes simulations linear stability analysis was applied to de-termine local stability characteristics of the steady axisymmetric base flow. In this paper the results from simulations at two different Reynolds numbers ReD = 1000 (case A) and ReD=500 (case B) (based on the body diameter and freestream velocity) are analyzed and compared in detail. For case A the temporal behaviour of the flow field suggests the onset of deterministic chaos in the wake, while the temporal behaviour for case B was found to be periodic over a long time.
