Observations of radiation exchange above and below Amazonian forest.

Abstract

Measurements of short and long wave components of the radiation budget were made above and below the tropical forest in the Amazon Basin of a total of 203 hours. Albedo was 12.25 + or - 0.2%. The net outward flux of longwave radiation was approximately 30W/sq.m, and fairly constant over the day. The relationship between net radiation, R, and solar radiation, S, is adequately described by the expression R = (0.858 + or - 0.006)S - (35.0 + or - 1.9) W/sq m. The fraction of solar radiation reaching the bottom of the canopy was low, 1.15%; net radiation in this position is consistent with low soil heat flux and low soil evaporation.-from STAR, 22(21), 1984
