Abstract

The application of one type of optical bistable device based on gallium arsenide as the nonlinear medium is described. Several possible operations with GaAs nonlinear Fabry-Perot etalons are discussed. Instead of a summary of the large number of experimental results with these devices, a recently developed computer model is used to illustrate the basic operating principles and applications. The focus is on the device operation itself, rather than the architecture and systems issues of optical computing.
