Optical nonlinearity and bistability in semiconductors due to biexciton formation

The exciton polariton spectrum shows intensity- dependent anomalies due to the virtual formation of biexcitons. This renormalization is treated by calculating the intensity-dependent polarization function which in turn determines the dielectric function. The results of the two-photon Raman scattering experiments are fitted for CuCl and CdS. This nonlinearity is shown to be well-suited to produce a mainly dispersive optical bistability.
