Optimum signal constellation design for high-speed optical transmission

Abstract

We describe an algorithm to determine the optimum signal constellation in MMSEsense for channel capacity achieving source distribution, and demonstrate that the signal constellations obtained by this algorithm outperform conventional QAM constellations (~1 dB for 16-ary constellation at BER of 10-8).
