An account is given on the development of a paracorporeal total artificial lung (TAL) prototype in an ovine survival model as an eventual bridge to lung transplant or recovery. Focus is on prototype TAL modifications: a lower resistance gas exchanger with collet-nut cannula connections and without ports; and right heart recovery period with a pulmonary artery-pulmonary artery (PA-PA) shunt prior to artificial lung connection.
