Abstract

Polyphenols are secondary metabolites produced by plants. They have great reduction potency that plays an important role in brain aging and in neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and Huntington's disease. Normal aging is accompanied by proper cognitive function and health of the brain. Oxidative stress and damage that lead to neurodegenerative diseases are due to ROS and RNS. These reactive species play a significant role in deciphering the mechanism and physiological properties of polyphenols. In this review, the structure and mechanism of basic polyphenol activity is discussed. The antioxidant properties of various polyphenols can be tested to uncover the most potent bioavailable polyphenol. Different polyphenolic compounds are also studied to understand the mechanisms and pathways adopted by them for treating and preventing neurodegenerative diseases.
