NiMoO4-MoO3 catalysts prepared by reactive sputtering were evaluated for the conversion of 1-butene to furan and maleic anhydride. As for precipitated catalysts, individual phases of NiMoO4 or MoO3 yielded very little of these products; however, thin films (150-300 A) of NiMoO4 on M0O3 (010) surfaces were highly active and selective. The sputtering technique has significant advantages for preparation and characterization of multicomponent catalysts compared to precipitation or impregnation routes.
