Abstract

The design and implementation of a menu-oriented interface for personal computers is discussed. Factors pertaining to the cognitive limitations of users are examined and their impact on the design of the system is described. The major attributes of the system are (1) all communication between the operator and the computer is through menus or forms (which are analogus to hard copy documents); (2) extensive help is available at all times; (3) the interface can adapt to the experience of the user; (4) the display processing time is short; and (5) an external data format exists that completely defines the interface. The various components of the interface are discussed in detail, followed by a discussion of the implementation.
