Stochastic transients of a deepwater compliant platform

Abstract

The transient dynamic behavior of a guyed tower platform with nonlinear stiffness subject to random wave loading is investigated using a non-Gaussian closure technique. The individual storm wave loadings are represented by rational spectra. The stiffness nonlinearity is expressed in terms of analytical function. The differential equation of motion is expressed as a set of first order stochastic equations. Ito's rule of stochastic differentials is used to develop ordinary differential equations of moments of the response. The moments are obtained by numerical solution of the equations. A new storm is considered to be acting on the structure when the structure is vibrating in a steady state from the previous storm. The transient behavior of the stochastic response parameters is studied. It is found that the guyline tensions vary significantly during the transient state. Sudden drops and increases in the tensions leading to jerk or snap loading will also affect the fatigue of the guylines. The time-dependent probability distribution of the response in the transient state is seen to vary significantly.
