### Abstract

Two-particle ladder and RPA terms are included in the perturbation expansion for the effective interaction θ in A = 18 nuclei through third order in the reaction matrix. Although the possibility of convergence is improved, this improvement is questionable, because of double counting. Ways for improving the calculation of θ are discussed.
