The development and implementation of the pathways family intervention for american indian children

Abstract

The Pathways Family Component works with children's families to reinforce health behaviors promoted by the Pathways curriculum, food service, and physical activity intervention. The Family Component consists of four primary strategies designed to create an informed home environment which can support behavioral change. Strategy 1 ) Action Packs are take-home worksheets and suggested activities for children and their families to complete together. Strategy 2) Snack Packs are small take-home packages of healthful snacks and low fat tips given to children to share with family members. Strategy 3) Two family events or "get-togethers" contribute to the education of family members and to the development of a positive working relationship between Pathways and the community. Each academic year a kick-off Family Fun Night (FFN) and culminating event are held. At the FFN, a series of learning booths demonstrate to children and their families the healthy behaviors taught by Pathways. At the culminating event, children demonstrate their newly-gained knowledge to their family. Strategy 4) Family/School-Based Advisory Groups, composed of family members and community volunteers, provide feedback on Pathways strategies, help negotiate barriers, and explore ideas for continued family participation. The Family/School-Based Advisory Groups encourage family ownership of Pathways and will be important to the sustainability of the program. Funded by NHLBI.
