Abstract

The mean flow in a turbulent wall jet embedded in an external stream depends on two velocity scales and on two length scales which, in turn, also depend on the velocity ratio between the jet and the free stream. By altering the velocity ratio therefore, one may detect the origin of a particular structure in this flow. It was determined that the natural wail jet contains two mutually dependent characteristic modes (or coherent structures) which travel together and exchange energy across the entire width of flow.
