Abstract

Samples were taken from sites within the Fresh Kills landfill, New York and dated by means of newspaper remains. The rubbish was sorted and analysed for cellulose, lignin and volatile solids contents and the cellulose:lignin ratio used as a measure of decomposition. Enzyme assays for decomposer enzymes were also made and diapers were collected for virus and bacterial assays. Moisture was important in determining degree of decomposition, which was much slower than anticipated. Methane generation depended directly on moisture content. Pathogenic organisms did not survive for very long. -B.Moss
