Theoretical evaluation of the noise growth and of the system performance for a link constituted by a chain of N optical amplifiers with in-line filters

Abstract

The amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noise growth in a chain of N amplifiers in the presence of in-line filters is analyzed including the semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOA) where the noise growth are combined with fast saturation of the amplifier gain. The peak power of the noise and the Q factor of the system are determined using erbium optical amplifiers, and by computer simulation using split-step method. The results indicate that the dynamics of SOA gives a qualitative agreement between theory and simulation.
