Transmission of streptococcic lymphadenitis by carrier swine

Abstract

Streptococcic lymphadenitis in swine was transmitted by direct contact between transmitter and susceptible swine. Only 2 of 6 potential transmitters, which had been exposed to group E streptococci (GES) 11 mth earlier, transmitted the disease by contact. The disease was not transmitted indirectly via feed or soil. The 6 potential transmitters were five 4 mth old swine and one 2 yr old sow which were orally exposed (3 times) to GES during a 2 wk period. None of the potential transmitters, including the 2 proved transmitters, developed visible or palpable abscesses after exposure. Group E streptococci were not isolated from swab specimens of tonsils and nasal membranes of the potential or proved transmitters throughout the postexposure period (12 mth).
