Variational principles confined and unconfined flow of ground water

Finite element techniques are being employed to an increasing degree in solving complicated groundwater flow problems, including problems with a free surface. These methods usually rely on the development of appropriate variational principles. This paper presents several such principles for both confined and unconfined flow.
